An interesting question and I'm sure that many will have opinions that will differ from mine.
I believe that 99.9% of the leaders are made and 0.01% are born leaders. When a leader is needed there is one that will rise and take control of a situation.
A true leader emulates the actions and behavior of those that lead before him. It is a skill like any other and is developed by practice and repetition. Hence a leader is made and improves his leadership qualities through actions and emulating past leaders. A leader enjoys the respect and admiration of others but most importantly the knowledge that he is helping those that he leads.
A true leader has to lead by example.
A true leader Talks the Talk & Walks the Talk.
A true leader has to be consistent.
A true leader treats everyone the same. You don't act one way with an important person and another way with one that is subordinate to you.
There are different types of leaders. Those that get things done and those that motivate and bring people to higher levels of performance. There are some leaders that have both qualities but that's not often the case.
The "doers" know how to direct, manage and get the "lob" done.
The "motivators" know how to inspire and bring people to the peak of their performance levels.
A true leader is not a short term thinker. He will never forfeit his integrity for a short term gain or profit.
A true leader is by nature a courageous person. That doesn't mean that he has no fear but that he faces fear and takes action in spite of his fears.
A true leader deals with facts and reality. He can strive for change but until that comes about he deals with things as they are and not as he would like them to be.
This is the first part of a series of three articles on "Is A Leader Made Or Born?" I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
